Watch: Rare Footage from Berghain’s Panorama Bar in Ricardo Villalobos Documentary

02.01.2017

Berlin techno club Berghain has allowed filmmakers  a temporary window through its infamous shroud of exclusivity. Despite the club’s strict no-camera policy, a substantial amount of footage has surfaced from its Panorama Bar area in a recent Ricardo Villalobos  documentary.

The film Ricardo Villalobos DOKU 24h Berlin follows 24 hours of Villalobos’ life in the studio, while DJing, and in personal interviews. Half of the footage consists of one of his performances in Berghain’s Panorama Bar, in which he plays the subversive sort of techno for which he became an international icon.

Berghain opened in 2004 following the close of another Berlin counterculture deposit called Ostgut. In addition to its no-camera policy, it has also garnered a reputation for techno elitism for its seemingly fleeting and arbitrary dress code policies.

The footage of Ricardo Villalobos’ performance in Berghain’s Panorama bar runs from about 11:30-27:00 in the above video. Villalobos will tour again in February beginning with a February 18th gig at ZoneClub in Pristina, Kosovo.
