Listen: Jamiroquai Shows Their Instrumental Side with “Cloud 9”

02.10.2017

The second of what looks to be a promising handful of upcoming Jamiroquai singles has arrived. Two weeks ago the seminal acid jazz band fronted by Jay Kay announced their long-awaited return by sharing the video for the title track of their upcoming album, and they’ve followed it up with the release of “Cloud 9.”

Where “Automaton” demonstrated Jamiroquai’s ability to deliver a single with modern-day production values, “Cloud 9” exhibits much more of the group’s celebrated disco funk leanings. Catchy as it may be, however, it doesn’t contribute a great deal to contemporary dance music that wasn’t already there. Although well composed and executed, it sounds like a song that should have appeared on Daft Punk‘s 2013 album Random Access Memories.

Jamiroquai is widely regarded as having pioneered the acid jazz genre during the ’90s, influencing the likes of Incognito and James Taylor Quartet. Their reunion follows a six-year hiatus which saw little more than reissues and one-off appearances.

Automaton in its entirety will arrive by way of Virgin EMI on March 31st. To listen to a preview clip of “Cloud 9” or download it via iTunes, Apple Music, Google Play or Amazon MP3, click here.
