Listen: MALAA Borrows from Yves Murasca’s “All About House Music” for “Bylina”

02.07.2017

Confession has come out swinging so far in 2017, and MALAA‘s latest single rounds out their right hook combo. Last week, French future house innovator Tchami released the dreamlike “Adieu.” Now, the label’s anonymous artist project has paid homage to Yves Murasca‘s “All About House Music” with the lead single from his upcoming Illegal Mixtape EP, “Bylina.”

A retro synth melody that sounds like a minor scale version of the KORG piano lead in “All About House Music” underscores its iconic house gospel spoken word sample in “Bylina.” By the drop, however, the similarities are few and far between. The largely percussive section leans more towards the dissonant fusion of G house and bass house exhibited in Confession’s recent Alchemy compilation.

For much of 2016, MALAA was widely speculated to be a collaboration between Tchami, DJ Snake, and perhaps Mercer after a handful of Redditors uncovered an apparent breadcrumb trail to that effect. Well over a year after the debut of the artist project, none of its collaborators have come forward to offer any information one way or the other.

According to Earmilk, “Bylina” is but one single from Malaa’s Illegal Mixtape, which follows up last summer’s Illicit EP. The upcoming EP is due out sometime before the end of the month.
