Listen: Orbital Releases First Track Since Split Titled “Kinetic”

02.03.2017

It’s barely been a day since Orbital announced their triumphant 2017 return, but they’ve already come bearing gifts. The English breakbeat/experimental duo has unveiled “Kinetic,” their first release as a duo since their infamous 2012 falling out.

“Kinetic” marks something of a departure from Orbital’s signature style, which typically hinges around syncopated drum patterns and inventive sound synthesis methods. The song’s four-on-the-floor format and somewhat chiptune-reminiscent synth styles don’t quite measure up to the creative risk taking which put the brothers on the map around the turn of the millennium.

During the five-year hiatus (in which Paul and Phil Hartnoll both attested that they did not even speak to one another), mixes and productions from either brother still found their way onto their SoundCloud account from time to time. By and large, the nature of these uploads indicate that both brothers had independently made somewhat halfhearted attempts to appeal to the mainstream EDM audience in the wake of their split.

In addition to performances at summer festivals Forbidden FruitBluedot and Standon Calling, Orbital has also announced that they’re working on a follow-up to 2012’s Wonky. Neither the duo nor their management have disclosed whether “Kinetic” is the upcoming album’s lead single at this time.
